Un bâtiment totem et sympatique, qu’on dévine dévolu à des activités festives et à une population jeune et qu’on situerait spontanément à Rotterdam plutôt qu’à St Cloud.

Par sa gaité et son anticonformisme, le bâtiment tranche avec la ZAC dans laquelle il est implanté, derrière un immeuble neuf de logements privés, à côté des bureaux néo-hausmanniens et d’une crêche du même acabit. C’est avec l’école maternelle années 30 en vis-à-vis qu’il décline une complicité, filant la métaphore de la cour en balcon, des coursives, de la couleur brique et du parvis. Quant à l’école maternelle années 70 d’à-côté, il entretient avec elle une affinité manifeste de volumes.

Un drôle de petit chateau-fort en somme que l’on doit à l’audace de la Ville de Saint-Cloud. Celleci se dote ainsi d’un équipement qui dynamise son image, l’ouvre aux écritures architecturales les plus contemporaines, actuelles et optimistes.

Superposer n’est pas isoler

Ce projet concrétise un véritable casse-tête programmatique : superposer 2 programmes autonomes sur une parcelle pourtant contrainte. KOZ a choisi :
- d’utiliser au maximum la parcelle impartie, d’occuper tout l’espace ;
- de créer un gros bloc fait de plusieurs cubes et de l’extruder, le creuser comme un canyon ;
- de superposer le programme sans isoler ses composantes en les mettant en communication et en tension réciproque par un jeu de failles qui amènent dans les profondeurs du bloc une lumière franche et épaisse.

Les espaces sont mis en relation par un un jeu de correspondances sensibles. Ils sont superposés sans être isolés. Les programmes dialoguent l’un avec l’autre grâce à des échappées visuelles : on se voit de part et d’autre, on se «ressent», on parvient aisément à se repérer dans un bâtiment à l’organisation spatiale fluide mais inhabituelle. Pour autant, l’autonomie fonctionnelle et administrative des 2 équipements (entrées distinctes, horaires de fonctionnement différents) est respectée.

Un jeu de couleurs franches

Le bâtiment se caractérise par un emploi très franc et décompléxé de la couleur, selon une large palette allant du rouge au vert, passant donc nécéssairement par le jaune, le rose, l’oranger. Ces couleurs sont appliquées en larges bandes sur la façade. A l’intérieur, ces mêmes couleurs se retrouvent de façon systématique dans les volumes du programme alignés sur la bande. Un code couleur qui permet de situer, à l’extérieur, les espace dans lesquels on a évolué à l’intérieur. Une initiation au volume pour néophytes plus ou moins jeunes.

Des espaces à s’approprier

Au-delà des fonctions des activités identifiées dans la programme, l’agence mise sur l’imagination et l’inventivité des occupants. C’est ainsi que l’agence a traité les circulations, rampes d’accès et coursives qui sont larges et aérées, faisant jusque 3 fois la taille réglementaire. La rampe qui mène à la terrasse de jeux et d’apprentissage est conçue selon la même idée. Elle représente du fait de son exceptionnelle largueur un espace « en plus» et participe en toute sécurité à la continuité physique et visuelle forte entre les espaces intérieurs et extérieurs du centre de loisirs. En effet, elle a été traitée avec l’ambition d’en faire un espace à part entière, en liaison direct avec l’intérieur du batiment, presque accessible de plain-pied depuis le centre. Un endroit auto-securisé, sans marches, doté de garde-corps de 1,80 m et vers lequel les enfants peuvent se rendre en toute sécurité.

Un ruban de béton

Le bâtiment est un empilement de programmes (gymnase, salle de pans, centre de loisirs, terrasse) emballés dans un ruban de béton. Ce matériau s’est imposé car il permet de mettre en valeur la présence sculpturale du bâtiment, tout en apportant une réponse efficace aux exigences
- de superposition des programmes sans mettre de poteaux au milieu d’un terrain de baskets ... ;
- d’isolement acoustique entre les deux composantes du programme.
Schématiquement, le projet est constitué de panneaux de béton préfabriqués porteurs. Le béton armé, matricé et teinté, contraste avec les surfaces colorées en panneaux de stratifié.

Des façades de couleur

La façade principale est en verre teinté selon un dégradé allant du rouge au vert. Les 3 autres façades sont plus unies.

Un projet durable

KOZ fait partie de la génération «chasse au gaspi». Les failles dans le bâtiment et la facades en verre apportent une lumière naturelle maximale. Le béton s’est imposé pour les raisons évoquées ci-dessus mais le choix s’est porté sur du béton préfabriqué.Les façades en verre teinté permettent un bonne protection solaire et une durabilité de la couleur. Enfin, le centre sportif et de loisirs propose de réelles facilités de surveillance et de maintenance.

KOZ Architectes

KOZ architectes a été crée en 1999 par Christophe Ouhayoun et Nicolas Ziesel, tous deux :
- diplômés de l’école d’architecture de Paris-Belleville en 1993;
- ayant accessoirement résidé aux Etats-Unis dans leur enfance ;
- inconditionnels de Mac-Intosh avant de virer dans les logiciels libres ;
- versés dans l’imagerie 3D et les cultures urbaines
- plutôt à l’aise avec le discours sur la conduite du changement dans la fabrique de la ville.

KOZ est membre fondateur du collectif d’architectes PLAN01, créé en 2001 avec les agences Atelier du Pont, Bocabeille-Prégo Architectures et Philéas. Avec PLAN01, ils ont fondé PLAN02, un bureau interne d’écoconception interne, fondé sur l’indexage en temps réel des projets des agences sur les exigences environnementales et sociales de la ville contemporaine.

KOZ produit des bâtiments atypiques, généreux et sensibles qui redéfinissent les lieux de la collectivité et mettent en perspective la mixité des usages. KOZ défent une architecture attentive à son contexte, créant la surprise, le «supplément d’usage», faisant emerger des espaces résiduels facilement appropriables et offerts à l’imagination des habitants, usagers, entourages.

KOZ assure régulièrement des missions étendues : maîtrise d’oeuvre, pilotage de chantier, synthèse, signalétique, mobilier. Le travail est organisé selon des postulats de rigueur, d’autonomie, de valorisation des compétences et de créativité. L’équipe est composée de 8 à 12 personnes, architectes, infographistes, communicant, gestionnaire.Tous veillent à la coordination des informations et participent à leur échelle aux prises de décisions qui jalonnent le projet.

KOZ profite de la synergie et du retour d’expérience des agences de PLAN01 dans un espace de travail partagé de 600m2, sur la rive droite de Paris.

An appealing, totemic building that you sense is designed for festive celebrations and young people, and that you might expect to find in Rotterdam rather than the uber bourgeaois St Cloud neighbourhoods. Even if it is only 300 meters away from OMA’s Villa Dalll’Ava.

With its cheerfulness and nonconformism, the building contrasts strongly with the urban development zone in which it’s located, behind a new block of private apartments and next to neo-Haussmannian offices and a day-nursery in a similar style. It is with the facing 1930s infant school that it empathises, extending the metaphor of the balcony courtyard, the passageways, the brick colour and the forecourt. As for the 1970s infant school next door, it maintains an obvious affinity with it in terms of shapes, only to dynamite the whole lot.

All in all it’s an odd little castle and cubist mountain, that owes its existence to the boldness of the Saint-Cloud Town Council, which has thereby acquired facilities that have revitalised its image and opened it to the most contemporary and positive architectural thinking.

Superimposed but not separated

This brief provided a real headache: how to accommodate two autonomous programs on a narrow plot of land. KOZ chose to:
- extrude the available area to the maximum height and hollow it out as with canyons that bring a clear and massive outdoor light deep inside the block.
- superimpose the two programs without isolating them, by creating visual links between activities and applying the same principles on all facades and in all spaces.

The spaces are superimposed without being separated. They communicate via visual glimpses: you see each other on all sides, you ‘feel’ each other, you can easily find your bearings in a building with a spatially fluid but unfamiliar layout. Nevertheless, the functional and administrative autonomy of the two activities (separate entrances and different operational timetables) is respected.

A pure colour scheme

The building uses colour very openly and assertively, with a wide palette ranging from red to green, by way of yellow, pink and orange. These colours cover the façade in wide stripes. Inside, the same colours are systematically repeated, like stepping in an oversized graffiti. A colour coding that helps you locate from the outside the areas created on the inside. A means of spatial orientation for young children. An echo to street culture codes for those who crawl on what is dubbed the coolest indoor climbing wall in France,or practice on the pop fencing rows below!

Spaces to be filled

Over and above the pure functionality of the activities identified in the project, the architects placed great hope on the imagination and inventiveness of the occupants. That’s why all corridors, access ramps and passageways, are wide and spacious, up to 3 times the regulation size. The ramp leading to the outdoor games and training area has been designed along the same lines. Due to its exceptional width, it provides an “additional” space and safely contributes to the strong physical and visual continuity between the Leisure Centre’s internal and external areas. Indeed, it was designed with the aim of making it useable for activities ranging from just running up and down to becoming a small sized outdoor theatre . With no steps and surrounded by a 1.80m railing, it is a secure and private area where children can go alone in complete safety.

A concrete ribbon

The building is a vertical pilling of activity spaces (gymnasium, climbing walls, leisure centre, outdoor area) wrapped in a ribbon of concrete providing unity to the whole . Concrete was the natural choice as it highlights the building’s sculptural appearance while satisfying the requirements of:
- superimposing of large rooms atop the gymnasium with little load bearing possibilities
- acoustic insulation between the two components of the project.
The project is broadly made up of prefabricated concrete load-bearing panels. The moulded and tinted reinforced concrete contrasts with the coloured surfaces of the laminated panels.

Coloured facades

The main facade is made of tinted glass with a colour gradient from red to green. The other 3 facades are more homogeneous, albeit coloured too.

A sustainable project

KOZ is part of the “environmentally aware” generation. The openings in the roofs and the glass facades bring maximum natural lighting everywhere to limit electrical consumption. Concrete was chosen for the reasons mentioned above but the preference was for prefabricated concrete, generating less waste and spill. The tinted glass facades provide good protection against setting sun and long-lasting colour. And of course all hot water is solar heated.

KOZ Architects

KOZ architectes was founded in 1999 by Christophe Ouhayoun and Nicolas Ziesel, both of whom:
- graduated from the Paris- Belleville School of Architecture ;
- lived in the USA when they were children;
- are well-versed in 3D imagery and urban cultures;
- and are completely at home in the debate about managing climate change priorities in the urban environment.

KOZ is a founding member of the PLAN01 Architects Collective, created in 2001 with the Atelier du Pont, Bocabeille-Prégo Architectures and Philéas agencies. With PLAN01 they founded PLAN02, an in-house eco-design engineering office providing real time feedback and orientations for social and environmental responsibility in their projects.

KOZ creates non-typical, freindly and sensitive buildings that redefine public spaces and emphasise the diversity of their uses. KOZ champions architecture that is aware of context and creates surprise and “added value” in terms of function, by making use of residual areas that are easily adapted to stimulate the imagination of local residents, users and visitors.

KOZ regularly carries out wide ranging assignments, including project management, site management, auditing, signage, and furniture Work is organised in accordance with the tenets of precision and autonomy, placing value on skill and creativity. The team is made up of 8 to 12 persons – architects, computer graphics designers, liaison officer and manager. Everyone is involved in information coordination and participation in decision-making throughout the project.

KOZ makes good use of the synergy and experience of the PLAN01 agencies in a 600m2 workspace on the Paris Right Bank.
